Singapore Psychiatric Association (SPA), the first professional body of psychiatrists was formed in 1980. At that time, there were about 25 practising psychiatrists in Singapore. The inauguration Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held in the old Woodbridge Hospital. The formation of SPA was given impetus so that Singapore could be a founding member of the ASEAN Federation of Psychiatry and Mental Health which was formed in 1981. SPA is currently a member of World Psychiatric Association (WPA).
Currently SPA has 48 Life Members, 23 Ordinary Members and 25 Associate Members. SPA has also formed a SYPT subsection – Singapore Young Psychiatrists and Trainees.
Since 2011, SPA has also been presenting the ‘Distinguished Psychiatrist Awards’ at its AGM to deserving psychiatrists who are distinguished and well respected local psychiatrist who have been actively contributing to the field of psychiatry in terms of clinical work, academic teaching, research and/or administration and imbue with values of integrity, professionalism and compassion’.
SPA has also been active in supporting local, regional and international psychiatric events and has been approached to be co-sponsor of psychiatric meetings and sit in International Advisory Committee for major conferences.
