WPA De Risio Award in Suicidology

On October 26th 2004 Sergio De Risio, illustrious italian psychiatrist and psychoanalist, last director of the Psychiatry Institute of the Catholic University of Rome, passed away.

A direct and deep communicative style, a manifold intelligence by which he drove a widespread culture, entwining it with complex and unusual connections, are memories of the ones who personally knew him.

Starting from freudian and lacanian psychoanalytic roots, joining them with the lymph of scientific research, Sergio De Risio developed in his activity a specific interest in suicidology as elective matter of study.

The commitment towards education and growth of young psychiatrists has also been one of the main concerns to which Sergio De Risio devoted his last albeit intense period of his life.

The World Psychiatric Association, through its Section on Suicidology – to whose ultimate foundation and development Sergio De Risio actively participated from 2002 – has recently taken the initiative to honour his fervent and peculiar activity in the field of suicidology. With this aim, a WPA Permanent Award entitled to Sergio De Risio has been established, addressed to the young researcher, aged less than 35 years, author of the best poster in suicidology presented to WPA official congresses.
