The 63rd Annual Conference of the Indian Psychiatric Society (ANCIPS-2011) was held on 16-18 January 2011 at the Hotel Ashok in New Delhi. The Honorable Minister of State Government of India, Mrs. Krishna Teerath inaugurated the conference and Dr. R K Srivastav, the Director General of Health Services Government of India was the Guest of Honor. Dr. U C Garg, the General Secretary of the Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS) presented the brief report of the Society and announced the names of recipients of various IPS Awards for the year 2010. Prof. Ajit Avasthi, the President of the Conference (ANCIPS-2011) presided over the inaugural function.
The President of the IPS, Dr. M Thirunavukarasu, delivered the presidential address. Drs. Carol Bernstein, Shiv Kumar Hatti, Dinesh Bhugra, Rohan Ganguli, Anand Pandurangi, Meera Narsimhan, M S Keshavan, M P Deva, Russell D’Souza, Vimal Kumar Sharma, Rudra Prakash, Subodh Dave, D Natarajan, and Sanjay Dube were among the overseas faculty. DLN Murthi Rao Oration by Dr. Ajit Avasthi, Tilak V Rao Oration by Dr. Sandeep Grover, Award Sessions, Theme Sessions, SAARC Session, Guest Lectures, Workshops, Symposia, Free Oral Papers Sessions, Posters Sessions and a special IPS–BIPA workshop on CBT conducted by Dr. Graeme Whitfield, were the scientific highlights.
A book entitled “ICONIC Institutions of Psychiatric Training in India” edited by IJP Editor Dr. T. S. S. Rao and two IPS Publications edited by the Chairman of IPS Sub-Committee for Publication Prof. P. Kulhara and his team entitled “Themes and Issues in Contemporary Indian Psychiatry” and “Psychometric Assessment Tools: Indian Perspective of Clinical Psychology” were released by the Chief Guest during the inaugural function. An exhibition by the office of the Indian Journal of Psychiatry (IJP) on “ICONIC Institutions of Indian Psychiatry” was one of the attractions of the conference.
The Annual CME program was inaugurated by the President of the Conference, Dr. Ajit Avasthi, and Prof. S. K. Sarin, the Chairman of the Board of Governors MCI delivered the key note address. Dr. S. K. Sarin congratulated the participants and the Indian Psychiatric Society for organizing the CME. The CME sessions were highly informative, interactive, and useful.
The conference was very well attended. More than 3000 registered delegates along with accompanying persons from India and from abroad made the conference lively and meaningful. The social and cultural programs hosted in the evenings by the organizing committee were praised and enjoyed by all participants. Our thanks go to the ANCIPS-2011 Organizing Committee led by Org. Chairman Dr. N K Bohra and Org. Secretary Dr. Sunil Mittal for their untiring efforts to make the event memorable.
