In the first semester in 2011, the Indonesian Psychiatric Association (IPA) has held some meetings for developing and continuing medical education for psychiatrists in Indonesia. The Indonesian Psychiatric Association biannual congress was held in Bandung, West Java on 1-5 July 2011. The theme for this year’s congress was Actualization of the Role of Mental Health in Indonesia: Challenges and Opportunity. More than 800 participants, mostly psychiatrists from all over Indonesia participated in this congress. Many topics were discussed in this meeting and some of the important issues were related to legal aspects of psychiatric practice and education in psychiatry. Related to psychiatric education, we admitted we lacked psychiatrists in Indonesia. For a population of 250 million, there are only around 600 hundreds psychiatrists in all Indonesia, and they mostly practice in big city in Indonesia such as Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya and Medan. It is still a great challenge and also an opportunity for our organization, Indonesian Psychiatry Board and Ministry of Health. In October 2011, there will be an IPA Community Psychiatry congress in conjunction with the Indonesia Mental Health Policy congress and in November 2011, there will be a Woman’s Mental Health Congress in Surabaya, East Java.
