The Biological Psychiatry Interest Group of the South African Society of Psychiatrists (SASOP) successfully hosted a Biological Psychiatry Congress in Stellenbosch on 22-24 September 2011. This congress is hosted by SASOP every second year. It is always well attended by psychiatrists and it attracts excellent national and international speakers. The next big event in the SASOP calendar is the 17th National Congress of the South African Society of Psychiatrists that will be held on 7-11September 2012 in Muldersdrift on the west of Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa. The theme of this congress is “Pride, Prejudice and Promise – From Origins to Outcomes”.
The South African health provision is currently being reviewed by the South African government. The main aim of this review is to improve access to health facilities by introducing National Health Insurance and having a single provider and a single funding model. Currently in South Africa there is a two tier system of health provision, namely the privately funded health system and the public health system funded by the government. SASOP is actively involved in the process so as to ensure that psychiatry is catered for in the envisaged National Health Insurance.
