Training and examination in Psychiatry during MBBS: The EC had its first full-fledged meeting at Kochi on January 22, 2012. The meeting demanded the Government of India and the Medical Council of India to consider the long pending demand of making Psychiatry as an independent examination subject during Graduate Medical training for MBBS. The meeting said: this will enable a primary health doctor to recognize and treat common mental disorders. This will also fill up the gap of shortage of psychiatrists in the country and will further stop human rights violation of the mentally ill. The EC said: in all the developed countries psychiatry is an important subject in UG medical education with separate examination for the subject. Even India’s neighbours in South Asia, Nepal and Sri Lanka have upgraded the teaching of psychiatry in UG curriculum and psychiatry is a separate subject in final year MBBS Examinations in both countries. This matter is now under the active consideration of the MCI.
