The 62nd Annual Conference of the Canadian Psychiatric Association
The vibrant city of Montreal played host to this year’s Annual Conference of the Canadian Psychiatric Association (CPA) on September 27-29. It was a lively event with 1,270 registrants in attendance taking in everything from workshops and courses to symposia and paper sessions.
Dr. Suzane Renaud, a clinical psychiatrist from Montreal who specializes in treating bipolar and personality disorders, was officially welcomed as CPA’s new President on the closing night of the conference. Dr. Renaud is an educator with many years of experience teaching and supervising medical students and psychiatry residents. She is also an associate professor of clinical psychiatry at McGill University.
Awards were also handed out that night to recognize psychiatrists and psychiatric residents for their various contributions to the mental health of Canadians. The CPA’s Special Recognition Award was bestowed on Dr. Pierre Beauséjour for his leadership in founding and nurturing Mental Illness Awareness Week and fostering partnerships to form the Canadian Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health, while the family of Nadia Kajouji and Mr. Harold Albrecht, MP, received a joint President’s Commendation for advancing the cause of suicide prevention.
Next year’s conference will take place in the nation’s capital at the Ottawa Congress Centre on September 26-28.
