WPA Thematic Conference on “Mental Health and Mental Illness: Focusing on Eurasia” convened in Yerevan from August 29-31, 2013

The World Psychiatric Association’s Thematic Conference on “Mental Health and Mental Illness: Focusing on Eurasia” convened in Yerevan from August 29-31, 2013.

The local organizers of the conference were: Armenian Psychiatric Association (ArPA), Armenian Medical Association and S. Kh.Avdalbekyan National Institute of Health of Republic of Armenia. The opening ceremony was held at the main hall of G. Sundukyan National Academic Theatre on August 29th, 2013 at 17:30 where Prof. Derenik Doumanyan, Minister of Health of Republic of Armenia, honored the ceremony with his presence and delivered a welcoming speech.

The conference program included 8 keynote lectures, 27 symposiums and workshops (full program is available at www.apnet.am/wpa2013); 317 mental health specialists from 34 countries attended the conference.

A significant event occurred during the conference to improve mental health services throughout the world. The leaders of five world mental health organizations met andsigned the Yerevan Declaration of “Cooperation for Improving Mental Health”. In his closing remarks, Prof. Pedro Ruiz, President of the WPA, complimented the success of the conference as it surpassed “Focusing on Eurasia”. The ability of five world mental health organizations to agree on the Yerevan Declaration is a testimony to the cooperative spirit of man to benefit those in need of mental health services.

Yerevan Declaration

The leaders of five world organizations committed to mental health care convened on August 30, 2013 in Yerevan during the Thematic Conference of the World Psychiatric Association on “Mental Health and Mental Illness: focusing on Eurasia”.

The Yerevan Declaration of “Cooperation for Improving Mental Health”, which was signed by the leaders of the World Association for Dynamic Psychiatry (WADP), the World Association for Psychosocial Rehabilitation (WAPR), the World Association of Social Psychiatry (WASP), the World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA), and the World Psychiatric Association (WPA) declared “The start of close collaboration to continue to address the problems listed above, and to promote continuing improvement of the mental health of all people in the world”.

This unprecedented initiative creates a new format of collaboration between five world organizations for meeting the challenges of Global Mental Health.
