January 2015
Message from the Secretary General

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

Hearty Greetings for the New Year 2015.  May you have a happy, peaceful and prosperous Year ahead. Let me express my profound gratitude to all of you and especially the Member Societies of WPA for electing me to this high office.  I will strive my best to live up to the confidence and trust you have reposed on me.

As you know, the new Executive Committee with Dinesh Bhugra as President have assumed office on September 16, 2014 at the conclusion of our 16th World Congress of Psychiatry, Madrid Spain. Our new President has highlighted the Public Mental Health Agenda in the WPA Action Plan 2014-17. We are all gearing up to make this a big success.  Others esteemed members of the EC are Helen Herrman (President-Elect), Michelle Riba (Secretary for Publications), Edgard Belfort (Secretary for Education), Afzal Javed (Secretary for Meetings), Masatoshi Takeda (Secretary for Meetings) and Armen Soghoyan (Secretary for Finance) besides me as Secretary General.  I have taken over from my predecessor Levent Kuey, who had served WPA admirably as SG from 2008-2014. As you know our Secretariat functions at the Geneva University Psychiatric Hospital. My first visit to the WPA Secretariat as the newly elected SG was undertaken on Nov 11 -12, 2014. Let me inform you, it was a most fruitful and rewarding experience. We have reviewed the functioning of the Secretariat,  its time schedules, working arrangements and administrative tasks. A WPA Thematic Conference on Intersectional Collaboration took place in Athens Greece (Oct 30 – Nov 2, 2014) . The Congress- a highly successful one-  included 80 sessions and 336 individual presentations and several hundred participants coming from 35 countries. The WPA Regional Congress Hong Kong Dec 12-14, 2014 was also a grand success. The theme was “Yin and Yang of Mental Health in Asia- Balancing Polarities”.   The most important forth- coming event is WPA International Congress, Bucharest  June 24-27, 2015 with the theme “Primary Care Mental Health: Innovation and Transdisciplinarity” . We should make it an outstanding  success.

We have appointed M/s LogicSoft, New Delhi as our new website manager from Jan 10, 2015. We will endeavour to make our website  “state-of –art”,  revamping and redesigned it and  making it compatible with cell phones, tablets etc . Let me look forward to your suggestions, guidance and support in all WPA matters.

Thanking you,

Roy Abraham Kallivayalil
