Dear Colleagues and Friends,
At the outset, let me express my profound gratitude to you all for electing me to this high office. I will strive my best to live up to the confidence and trust reposed on me.
As you know, the new Executive Committee with Dinesh Bhugra as President have assumed office on September 16, 2014 at the conclusion of our 16th World Congress of Psychiatry, Madrid . Our new President has highlighted the Public Mental Health Agenda in the WPA Action Plan 2014-17. We are all gearing up to make this a big success. Other esteemed members of the EC are Helen Herrman (President-Elect), Michelle Riba (Secretary for Publications), Edgard Belfort (Secretary for Education), Afzal Javed (Secretary for Meetings), Masatoshi Takeda (Secretary for Meetings) and Armen Soghoyan (Secretary for Finance) besides me as Secretary General. As you know our Secretariat functions at the Geneva University Psychiatric Hospital. My first visit to the WPA Secretariat as the newly elected SG on Nov 11 -12, 2014 was most fruitful and rewarding. We have reviewed the functioning of the Secretariat, its time schedules, working arrangements and administrative tasks. Recently, we also had the WPA Thematic Conference on Intersectional Collaboration at Athens Greece (Oct 30 – Nov 2, 2014) and the WPA Regional Congress Hong Kong Dec 12-14, 2014 which were big successes. The most important forth- coming event is WPA International Congress, Bucharest June 24-27, 2015 with the theme “Primary Care Mental Health: Innovation and Transdisciplinarity” .
We will endeavour to make our website www.wpanet.org “state-of –art”, revamping and redesigning it and making it compatible with cell phones, tablets etc . Looking forward to your suggestions, guidance and support in all WPA matters.
Roy Abraham Kallivayalil
Secretary General, World Psychiatric Association
