The World Psychiatric Association, as part of its Action Plan 2008-2011, has launched a programme of research fellowships for early-career psychiatrists from low- or lower-middle income countries, in collaboration with internationally recognized Centers of Excellence in Psychiatry.
Within this programme, the World Psychiatric Association is funding a research fellowship at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD, USA.
The successful candidate will spend one year at the University of Maryland School of Medicine nd conduct research on psychosocial or health service issues, with an emphasis on schizophrenia and other serious mental illness.
Fifty-nine applications were received by the deadline of September 30. The selection was made by Profs. Alan Bellack and Mario Maj.
The selected fellow is Dr. Yu-Tao Xiang, from China. His fellowship will start on January 1, 2010.
He will receive a subsidy of 30,000 Euros plus coverage of travel expenses (economy class). He has committed himself to report to the World Psychiatric Association about the results of his activity, and to apply in his country of origin what he has learned.
