News of the Indonesian Psychiatric Association (IPA)

Indonesian Psychiatric Association (IPA) has a long root in psychiatric development in Indonesia, one of the exotic and the biggest archipelago in the world The IPA was established in 1960’s named The Association of Neurology, Psychiatry and Neurosurgery. It changed its name to Indonesia Psychiatric Association in 2001 when the three medical specializations formed their own associations. Currently, IPA has 22 branches all over Indonesia. There are 9 sections: Section on Schizophrenia, Bipolar, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry, Addiction Psychiatry, Geriatric Psychiatry, Woman’s Mental Health and Community Psychiatry.

At the 6th National Congress of the Indonesian Psychiatric Association (IPA) in Manado, 3 - 5 November 2009, Dr Tun Kurniasih Bastaman was elected as the new president of IPA for the period of 2009 - 2013. She replaced Prof Syamsulhadi the former IPA President. We hope in this new leadership, together with the spirit of rebuilding professionalism of Indonesian Psychiatrist, we can face challenges in the future. At the Congress, the IPA Standard of Profession in Psychiatric Practice and IPA Code of Conduct were officially accepted and released.

There will be two national events in 2010 under the auspices of the IPA, the 3rd National Conference on Psychotherapy on 1 - 2 May and the 6th National Conference on Schizophrenia on 17 - 20 October 2010. On 6 March 2010 IPA is organizing the Indonesian Psychiatric Summit in Jakarta. A WPA Regional Meeting will be organised by the Indonesian Psychiatric Association to be held in Bali, Indonesia, 13 - 15 September 2012.
