"Mubarak State Prize for Medical Sciences 2010" goes to a professor of psychiatry: Ahmed Okasha

Prof. Ahmed OkashaThe Egyptian Academy of Science has bestowed upon Professor Ahmed Okasha on the 21st of June 2010 the "MUBARAK State Prize for Medical Sciences 2010" named after the Egyptian President. It is considered to be the highest national prize for Medicine. This award comes after Prof. A. Okasha had received the state merit prize for medical science in 2009.

Top Academics and physicians from different medical specialities were nominated, but psychiatry prevailed. The mass media commented that after this prestigious award, psychiatry is no more marginalized in Egypt and the Arab world, hoping that it will spread to other countries world wide.

Currently, Prof. Ahmed Okasha is the Director of the WHO Collaborating Center for Mental Health, Institute of Psychiatry, Ain Shams University, President of the Egyptian Psychiatric Association, President of the Arab Federation of Psychiatrists, Past President of the World Psychiatric Association and a member of the WPA Council.

Professor Mario Maj, WPA President, stated that: "This prestigious prize is a well-deserved recognition of an exemplary career, showing at the highest level how a psychiatrist can be at the same time a first-class clinician, an internationally recognized scientist and a person who tangibly contributes to the progress of his country".
