About

World Psychiatric Association Section on Genetics in Psychiatry

The genetic make-up of an individual - in conjunction with environmental factors- plays an important role in the development and course of mental disorders. Advances in psychiatric genetic research promise significant improvement in our understanding and treatment of people with psychiatric disorders. Progress in the science of psychiatric genetics has not yet translated into clinical practice. But we are at a point where it is crucial to involve a broad community from around the globe to guide its further steps in a way that is fair, ethically sound, and beneficial for patients, individuals at risk, and their society - across all social classes, cultures, and ethnicities.

The Section of Genetics in Psychiatry desires to reach a larger community of mental health experts and to connect with other Sections to promote our knowledge and ideas, and to obtain valuable input from others.
