Introduction
Within the next few years, for the first time in history, most of the world population will live in urban areas . This trend, which is evident especially in developing countries, is expected to continue, as the global urban population is projected to double over the next 30 years. As cities try to adjust to this phenomenal growth, several environmental, socio economic and infrastructural problems are having a serious impact on health and mental health of their dwellers.

What is new in the field
There have been a number of recent studies on topic of pertinence to urban mental health. These include studie comparing urban to rural populations, studies on socioeconomic deprivation in inner cities, psychopathological expression in urban areas, and manifestations of city violence. Another direction of inquiry has focused on multicultural aspects of adjustment to city living and cultural aspects of psychopathology.
