The ‘Spirituality, Religion, Psychiatry and Wellness’ webinar took place on Wednesday 5th July 2023. Hosted by the WPA Section on Religion, Spirituality and Psychiatry (SRSP) with contributions from SRSP Executive Committee Members, this webinar explores why spirituality and religion is important to Psychiatry.


The webinar was opened by Dr. Rajashree Ray (Executive Committee Member, SRSP) and Dr. Afzal Javed (President, World Psychiatric Association). Three presentations were given by Dr. Alan Fung (Chair of SRSP, Canada), Dr. Chris Cook (Co-Chair of SRSP, UK) and Dr. Bruno Paz Mosqueiro (Secretary of SRSP, Brazil) each providing insights on this important area. The webinar also includes video clips from China, Brazil and India.


Key Learning Objectives include:

  • Appreciate the relevance of spirituality/religion (S/R) to psychiatry, psychopathology, mental health and wellness across diverse settings worldwide

  • Describe some key professional and ethical guidelines on S/R in psychiatric practice

  • Understand some research literatures on the intersections between S/R and mental health - including potential benefits and harms

  • Develop knowledge and skills in addressing S/R issues in clinical psychiatric practice

  • Understand educational/training issues in S/R for psychiatric professionals and trainees

  • Appreciate how collaborations between mental health professionals and S/R communities may enhance mental health care
