Q2 2021
Dear Colleagues,
Welcome to the return of the World Psychiatric Association's (WPA) eNewsletter! We are both delighted and excited to bring you the first edition of "WPA Review" where, each quarter, we will take a look back at the great work and news from all our member societies and components.
As part of our commitment to providing you with a centralised point of communication and coordination, the eNewsletter will also offer us the opportunity to share insights and experiences as we continue to work together and address the mental health implications of COVID-19.
So without further ado, let me kick off this Review with news from myself! We have had a busy first half of the year with ongoing Action Plan 2020-2023 Working Group meetings, and I am pleased to see the progress they have been making and the activities they are organising.
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect all of our lives, the WPA Advisory Committee for Responses to Emergencies (ACRE) has been working hard and acting as the coordinating body for the assessment of emergency needs and the mobilisation of resources and support through our member societies and partners. The latest ACRE report can be read here. As part of this work, we sent a letter of support to our colleagues in India as they were faced with some dreadful circumstances at the height of the pandemic. The letter can be read here.
Another important part of our Action Plan is supporting and partnering with our various member societies and other regional academic institutions on educational activities. One upcoming course in preparation is with the American College of Cardiology (ACC). Together, we are thrilled to bring mental health education to the NCD Virtual Academy and improve awareness about the role of mental health disorders in undermining physical well being. We will inform you as soon as the course is ready to launch.
Thanks to COVID-19, a lot of our meetings and congresses for the past year have had to take on a slightly different format, but this has not deterred us! We held our first ever virtual 20th WPA World Congress of Psychiatry (WCP) in March this year, which was a huge success with over 3000 participants from over 100 countries. We also enjoyed the WPA Regional Congress in St. Petersburg in May where they were able to combine a virtual and in person congress with great success. We are also looking forward to the upcoming Regional Congress this month in Kyiv as well as our 21st WCP in October this year, which will also be held virtually. We look forward to meeting you all there, whether it is on- or offline.
Finally, I would like to congratulate the team behind our new learning management platform (known as the WPA Education Portal) that launched earlier this year. It has been a huge success with more than 1000 psychiatrists registering within the first few days to access our learning materials. As of today, the Portal hosts resources spanning some 30 topics related to mental health in over 15 languages, including two "live" online courses. They are now working hard to develop the resource further and already have seven courses lined up and six modules planned in the coming months. Please do take a look at the Portal here.
I do hope you enjoy reading our new eNewsletter and we would like to thank you for all of your contributions. WPA remains committed to supporting our components through these difficult times, and we aim to be transparent and timely in all our communications. Thank you all for the ongoing support you provide us in return.
Best wishes,
Afzal
Prof. Afzal Javed
WPA President
