Q4 2024
Dear Friends,
In 2024, the WPA actively participated in a series of impactful congresses and meetings in the American and Asian regions that fostered inclusion and strengthened ties within the global psychiatric community.
The year began with the signing of the ‘Agreement of the Americas’, an agreement amongst ten associations (World Psychiatric Association (WPA), American Psychiatric Association (APA), Latin American Psychiatric Association (APAL), World Association on Dual Disorders (WADD), Canadian Psychiatric Association (CPA), American Society of Hispanic Psychiatry (ASPH), Promoting Mental Health in Females (WARMI), Spanish Society on Dual Disorders (SEPD) and Mexican Consortium of Neuropsycho-pharmacology (MCNP)), followed by the APA meeting in New York, the APAL meeting in Buenos Aires, the World Congress of Psychiatry (WCP) in Mexico City, and continuing with the World Congress of Asian Psychiatry hosted by the Asian Federation of Psychiatric Associations (AFPA) in Bali, Indonesia.
These gatherings, which will be followed up, create a fruitful platform, for dialogue, for addressing region-specific challenges in mental health, and for sharing experiences while fostering a spirit of global solidarity.
Looking ahead to 2025, activities will embrace African and European perspectives that will deepen and revitalise partnerships and strengthen inclusivity in global psychiatry.
In Africa, a regional meeting will be held in Alexandria, Egypt by the Egyptian Psychiatric Association and in Europe, the European Psychiatric Association (EPA) will meet in Madrid, followed by the 2025 World Congress of Psychiatry (WCP) in Prague.
Experiences from these gatherings will offer opportunities to work towards true global and inclusive psychiatry with collaboration across continents grounded in awareness of each other’s resources, possibilities, abilities, and challenges.
By inclusiveness and equality, the global psychiatric community moves closer to a future where mental health is prioritised, equitable, and accessible for all.
With my best wishes,
Danuta
Prof. Danuta Wasserman
WPA President
