Q1 2023
Dear Friends,
Welcome to the first edition of our World Psychiatric Association's (WPA) eNewsletter – WPA Review in 2023 and on behalf of the World Psychiatric Association (WPA), we hope you had a healthy and productive start to 2023. Unfortunately, the world was shaken by another tragedy with the deeply saddening news of the earthquakes that hit Turkey and Syria in February. Thousands of people lost their lives and many more were injured or left homeless in this terrible disaster. In these difficult times, our thoughts are with the victims and on behalf of WPA, we wish to express our deepest sympathy to all the victims and share the pain of their loved ones. WPA also offered to support all activities that aim to provide assistance to those who are experiencing mental health crises and to support our fellow professionals from the Psychiatric Association of Turkey who continue to look after their patients under these dramatic circumstances.
As always in life, we find the best way to move forward and WPA has been working hard to in its efforts to promote mental health wellbeing with the support from our committed members around the world. We have listed some of these worthwhile activities below in our first quarterly newsletter of 2023.
From WPA's side, we are now in full preparation mode for our 23rd WPA World Congress (WPA WCP23) which takes place in Vienna. From collating nominations for the 2023 WPA elections (which will announced during the WPA General Assembly in Vienna), organising a varied scientific programme and coordinating the WPA 2023 Jean Delay award, there is a lot to do!
The WPA has once again announced fellowships (Travel Awards) for Trainee Psychiatrists and Medical Students to attend the WPA WCP23. There are two separate prestigious awards, one for all trainees in psychiatry and one for all medical students. More information on this can be found here.
Our day-to-day work continues and WPA has also been busy this past quarter with a number of projects. Our Action Plan 2020-2023 Working Groups have continued to meet and work together to fulfil their terms of reference. I am pleased to see the progress they have been making and the activities they have and are organising.
Online activities continue to be an important focus for us with a list of ongoing and completed projects, such as:
- We continue to use our website and social channels to communicate and promote our activities, resources and work.
- WPA Scientific Sections have been updating their web pages to ensure their Section's information is up-to-date and engaging. You can view the pages here. We have also designed a new, easy-to-use form so that Section Officer can update the information on their pages in a couple of clicks.
- The WPA Educational Portal team have added a number or new modules to the platform. During 2022, WPA has been uploading a series of learning modules and webinars coving a variety of subjects including: McMaster University’s Psychotherapy Training e-Resources, New education modules in the Medical Students and Psychiatry series, to name a few. For the full list of latest additions, visit the Portal itself to view the wealth of resources that are available to you.
- WPA, the Global Mental Health Academy, and the National Institute of Psychiatry Ramón de la Fuente Muñiz, Mexico collaborated on the Spanish version of the ICD-11 Diagnostic Requirements for Mental, Behavioural or Neurodevelopmental Disorders which took place at the end of March.
- The “WPA e-Journal Club” published its second edition and we are now working on the next one. Past copies of the WPA eJournal can be read here.
As my triennium draws to an end, I am now more than ever motivated and inspired by the commitment and hard work I see from my fellow professionals and I look forward with enthusiasm and confidence, convinced that we will be able to transform new challenges into opportunities and fulfil the WPA’s triennium’s goals. Thank you all for the ongoing support.
Best wishes,
Afzal
