World Psychiatric Association Review - Q2
Message from the WPA President

Q2 2023

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the second edition of our World Psychiatric Association's (WPA) eNewsletter – WPA Review in 2023 and on behalf of the World Psychiatric Association (WPA). Despite the ongoing difficulties in our world, as we embark on the last quarter of my tenure together, I am filled with an immense sense of hope and determination for the future of psychiatric care and the collaborative nature of WPA and its members.

The last quarter has been filled with a number of activities from congresses to providing support to those in need, we have listed some of these worthwhile activities below in our first quarterly newsletter of 2023.

From WPA's side, we have been busy finalising and preparing the last details for our 23rd WPA World Congress (WPA WCP23) which takes place in Vienna in September. Since the last eNewsletter, we have:
  1. Released information about the upcoming General Assembly and the election process
  2. Published the nominations for the 2023 WPA elections, (which will voted during the WPA General Assembly in Vienna),
  3. Finalised a varied scientific programme
  4. Announced the winner of the WPA 2023 Jean Delay award, to name just a few activities.

The WPA once again offered fellowships (Travel Awards) for Trainee Psychiatrists and Medical Students to attend the WPA WCP23. After receiving hundreds of applications from all around the world, we were thrilled to announce the winners of both awards. I would like to congratulate the deserving winners again here and we look forward to welcoming them all in Vienna. More information about the awards and the winners can be found here.

As usual, our day-to-day work also continues with a number of different ongoing activities, including:
  1. Our Action Plan 2020-2023 Working Groups have continued to meet and work together to fulfil their terms of reference. I am pleased to see the progress they have been making and the activities they have and are organising.
  2. WPA Scientific Sections continue to update their web pages to ensure their Section's information is up-to-date and engaging. You can view the pages hereWe have also designed a new, easy-to-use form so that Section Officers can update the information on their pages in a couple of clicks.
  3. The WPA Educational Portal team has added a number or new modules to the platform. During 2023, WPA has been uploading a series of learning modules and webinars coving a variety of subjects including: The Quality Management series, Disorders of Intellectual Development courseRacism and discrimination in mental health care of migrants, refugees and forcibly displaced people, and 'There is no mental health care without human rights' webinar. For the full list of upcoming online educational activities, please visit our web page. For the full list of latest additions, visit the Portal itself to view the wealth of resources that are available to you.
  4. We have sponsored, collaborated on or supported a number of online educational activities, including the "Fight Against Stigma: An Unmet Need for Practicing Psychiatrist Series" and the "International Webinar Series on Gambling: Evidence and Systems of Care", to name but a few. For the full list of upcoming online educational activities, please visit our web page.
  5. The “WPA e-Journal Club” published its fourth edition and we are now working on the next one. This and previous editions of the WPA eJournal can be read here

During these last months of my triennium, lets come together to fulfil our goals and seek new opportunities. Thank you all for the ongoing support.

Best wishes,
Afzal
