The Central Role of Education in Psychiatry
Education plays a fundamental role in improving the quality of psychiatric care and addressing the increasing global demand for psychiatric services. Recognizing this, the World Psychiatric Association (WPA) has identified the advancement of psychiatric education as a central component of its strategic priorities. To consolidate and strengthen its educational efforts, the WPA established a dedicated Committee on Education and Scientific Publications, tasked with developing and implementing comprehensive, sustainable, and globally accessible training programs. These initiatives aim to support psychiatrists at all stages of their professional development and to promote international collaboration in psychiatric education. Joining committees, like the Committee on Education and Scientific Publications, WPA Scientific Sections play a vital role in shaping and delivering educational programs by contributing specialized knowledge and subject-specific content.
In-Person Educational Activities
WPA’s educational activities are delivered both in-person and online, enabling broad participation and engagement across geographic and professional boundaries. In-person education takes place primarily at WPA congresses, as well as at regional and other meetings. In these settings, structured sessions, symposia, workshops, and informal collegial interactions offer psychiatrists opportunities for continuing professional development and exchange of knowledge and expertise. These events serve as key platforms for sharing advances in psychiatric knowledge and practice, as well as building academic and clinical networks. The Renewed WPA Education Portal
In addition to its meeting-based initiatives, the WPA has significantly enhanced its online education strategy. The WPA Education Portal has recently been renewed, both technically and in terms of content. The updated Portal offers an improved, user-friendly interface that connects psychiatrists and trainees globally through a range of multi-modal learning opportunities. The Portal provides WPA members accessible and high-quality educational materials, in multiple languages, covering a wide array of clinical and academic and professional topics relevant to psychiatry. While most content is freely available, certain services — such as Continuing Professional Development (CPD) certification — may involve a nominal fee. The WPA welcomes new contributions to the Portal to ensure that it remains a dynamic, relevant, and inclusive resource for psychiatric education. For more information, please visit the link below:

WPA Education & Psychiatry Journal
The Education & Psychiatry journal is an official publication of the WPA Education and Scientific Publications Committee, dedicated to advancing psychiatric education worldwide. It serves as a platform for sharing innovative ideas, best practices, and critical reflections on training, curriculum development, and educational policy in psychiatry. The journal promotes collaboration among educators, clinicians, and policymakers, aiming to enhance the quality and accessibility of psychiatric education. It also highlights key WPA initiatives. Each issue features editorials, thematic essays, meeting reports, interviews, book presentations and much more, fostering dialogue across academic and clinical communities. Through its diverse content, the journal contributes to the continuous improvement of psychiatry education globally.

Following publication of WPA’s recommended training framework for psychiatrists in 2017, the WPA provides accreditation for the curricula of those member societies whose training programs meet the recommended requirements.
Education, Science, Publications and Research Initiative (ESPRI)

ESPRI is a WPA program set up to provide seed funds to jump start innovative and promising programs in low- and middle-income countries (LAMIC).  Each year, WPA awards $15,000 to three projects ($5k per project).  These funds should be matched with funds the applicants have been able to secure through other national and/or international organisations, including academia, governments, NGOs, and/or industry.

80% of psychiatric expertise is currently concentrated in 30% of countries in the world.  However, it is in the remaining 70% of countries without this expertise that 80% of mental health needs and burden are concentrated.  The WPA Volunteer Program aims to redress this imbalance by drawing volunteers from high income countries to provide training and education where it is needed most.

The WPA Committee on Education and Scientific Publications is going to launch a Global Study on Psychiatric Training, to explore the structure and quality of psychiatry teaching to medical students in many countries around the world, by examining the integration of and the emphasis on psychiatry within undergraduate medical curricula. This will include whether psychiatry is mandatory in the curriculum, the duration of clinical placements, and the range of subspecialties covered. Additionally, the study will evaluate current challenges and offer potential improvements in psychiatry training, including the availability of qualified trainers, examination formats, and opportunities for international collaboration and resource development. The study will also address how the WPA can best help countries improve psychiatry training for medical students. Ultimately, it will help us all as we work to address global mental health needs and disparities by providing effective educational strategies that take regional contexts into account, while trying to reduce stigma and attract more medical students to psychiatry.
