2020 - 2023

As we enter the 2020-2023 triennium, it is important to ensure that we link the priorities of the new WPA
Action Plan with the important work undertaken in recent years.
Under the stewardship of immediate past-President, Professor Helen Herrman AO, WPA has focused on its contribution internationally to the representation, reputation, development and knowledge of psychiatry; development of operational, project-based work that focuses on critical mental health topics at a global level; and attracting new investment to support WPA's work, especially through partnerships and other relationships with organisations that share our objectives
The new Action Plan develops and builds on these concepts as we focus on consolidating psychiatry as an inspiring branch of medicine. Specifically, we aim to:
Work has already commenced in some of these areas with the creation of six task forces. Examples of some of the work those task forces have been doing can be found below. We will continue to add to these as we accelerate this work for the new triennium.

- promote psychiatry as a medical specialty in clinical, academic and research areas and to promote public mental health as a guiding principle;
- highlight the specific role of psychiatrists in working with other professionals in health, legal and social aspects of care; and
- ensure WPA’s positive engagement with member societies and WPA components, mental health professionals & general health care workers
