WPA Volunteer Program

The WPA Volunteer Programme aims to mobilise psychiatrists from different parts of the world to support countries with training needs in order by delivering training and education to target professionals. Stakeholders like mental health professionals, primary care doctors and even other health professionals might be included. The current plan is to set up a WPA Volunteer Programme (WPA-VP) in which interested volunteers from the member societies with appropriate expertise can be matched with member societies with identified training and education needs. This programme aims at enhancing the mental health capacities of the host countries in delivering mental health services, and visiting psychiatrists will not be involved in service delivery.

80% of psychiatric expertise is currently concentrated in 30% of countries in the world.  However, it is in the remaining 70% of countries without this expertise that 80% of mental health needs and burden are concentrated.  The WPA Volunteer Program aims to redress this imbalance by drawing volunteers from high income countries to provide training and education where it is needed most.

Building on our role as a connector and collaborator, WPA is looking for volunteers who are willing and able to share their time and expertise to help build capabilities in low and middle income countries. Similarly, we invite those member societies who need training support to apply to take part in the programme.
