Wars in the 21st Century: Mental Health Impacts, Intervention Strategies, and the Cost to Our Humanity

Position Statement on War and Mental Health Issued jointly by the organizing committee following the webinar "Wars in the 21st Century: Mental Health Impacts, Intervention Strategies, and the Cost to Our Humanity" — June 5, 2026

The Global Mental Health Impact of Armed Conflict

No war is local anymore: every conflict inflicts measurable psychological harm far beyond its borders.
War brings destruction, violence, and suffering on a scale that defies comprehension, but its violence does not end at the border.

In an age of relentless media, the imagery of atrocity reaches billions and continuous exposure to graphic reports and imagery of barbarity keeps populations worldwide in a state of chronic stress, and as mental health professionals, we understand precisely what that means: existing conditions deteriorate, new ones emerge, and entire societies grow more fragile.

This exposure is not passive. It is a chronic wound, accumulating silently across populations who never held a weapon and never fled a warzone.
This harm is real, it is cumulative, and it cannot be dismissed.

We therefore call on governments, international bodies, and policymakers to formally recognize global mental health impact as an inescapable consequence of armed conflict — and to incorporate it, without exception, into every assessment of the true cost of war.
